Mo Christmas Starts Now

You know what time it is: Christmas Music at the Mo's.
It starts tonight. Latte's. Cocoa. Blankets. Socks. Dancing. Sugar cookies. #crapineedtogotothestore

I made a playlist that we'll be starting our season out with, if you care to listen along. It's got a good mix: Colbie, Buble, Sufjan, Amy, Kelly, and an addition from last year, Penatonix.

I'm excited that our girl is getting older and can understand music and dance along with us. It'll be fun to add some of her favorites to this list as the most wonderful time of the year approaches.

You're Taking Us WHERE? | A Disney Birthday

For my 26th birthday, Tyson surprised me with a trip to the happiest place on earth, coupled with a new dress and fancy hat.

I enjoy Disneyland, like the rest of the world. He doesn't. So the real surprise was that he initiated a trip for the sake of his girls! Such a sacrificial man. (Read in cheeky tone.)

It was Baby Girl Mo's first trip and man, it was a whole new experience walking into this place with mom glasses on. I over packed the diaper bag and we paid way too much money for an overpriced pair of Minnie ears, a churro, a hamburger with extra pickles, a large water, and an amazing ice cream sundae. Everyone eats all day when at Disney right?

The best part of the trip was about 6:31PM, when the parade started and my daughter's eyes experienced a whole new level of amazement. She danced, smiled, laughed, but mostly stared in awe. Or at least I think she was in awe. I can't really tell what she's thinking yet. But it looked about right.

I don't think Disneyland is a necessity in life, by any means. But there is something to this magical land that has captured the hearts and memories, of children and adults alike, from all over the world. And while the glitter may fade and birthday's will end, these moments, ones like Ty and I playfully fighting in Buzz Lightyear's Astro Blasters, or ones of my girl pinching Minnie's nose and giggling, those moments I will hold tightly and look over fondly for years to come.

Ty, thanks for starting my 27th year of life in such a magical way. I love you.

Some have asked about baby-friendly rides at Disneyland, so I've listed the ones we enjoyed with baby (she's 8 months):

DISNEYLAND

CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE

*There are a TON more rides that are baby friendly, we just ran out of time. See list and qualifiers here.

EXTRA TIPS FOR DOING DISNEY WITH BABY

  • If you have a flatbed stroller, bring it. | It was so nice to change diapers in our own stroller instead of the bathroom stalls. It was also convenient for naps.
  • Don't over think the clothing situation. | Simplify by bringing 2 full body onsies instead of multiple shirts and pants.
  • Bring 1 medium weight blanket. | Use to cover stroller if it gets warm and to cover baby when it gets cold. It will get cold at night.
  • Get a "1st Time" or "Birthday" button! | You can get them at City Hall, Chamber of Commerce, or the red umbrella on Main Street in Disney. Red umbrella is your best bet.
  • Bring a meal. | There is a designated "lunch table" area right outside the park gates where you and your family can enjoy your own sack lunches. We didn't do this, but we will next time.
  • Condense, Condense, Condense | We used this Munchkin Powdered Formula Dispenser to make 3, 8oz, bottles during the day. So much easier than bringing 5 bottles with dry formula.
  • Be Easy | Too many parents' experiences are tainted by the hustle of doing everything, and that's not fun for anyone. Do what you can with what you have and eat ice-cream! If your kid has a blowout in the middle of the parade (not that mine did...) don't stress. Laugh and change in your flatbed stroller ;)

Merry Christmas from the Mo's

Christmas comes with all sorts of expectations, traditions, generations and institutions. It's nearly inescapable.

And while all the bloggers I read religiously have posted about theirs (which I've had the best time reading and gleaning ideas), I feel like the four "tions" of Christmas and beyond for the Mo home are changing. Of course, there are one or two things that will never change, and I'm grateful for those. Love being the top. We know we are loved and we know we love.

But as for the rest, we are in transition. I'm not sure what 2014 will bring for our little family. Despite our fresh and crisp and barely unwrapped day planners, I don't think anyone really ever does. But I do know that it will be new and maybe even a little scary. It always is. A little scary.

But that's what we said last year too. And to be honest, the scary parts made it that much more beautiful. Why does it work out that way I wonder...

I don't know all that this year has brought for you, but I have heard and seen and read your stories.

-Some of you are champions in my book. You have fought through a heavy and weighted year and you deserve more than a medal. I wish I could hug you.
-Some of you are champions because you accomplished goals you never thought possible! You got literal medals! I wish I could hug you too.
-Some of you had a well-deserved break from chaos and clutter this year. It wasn't easy breezy, but close to it. I want to buy you coffee and ask you how you did it!
-Some of you, well, your year is 2014 and I want to be your biggest fan. Start strong, keep stride, and push as hard as you can. You are good enough.

Thank you for your gifts of friendship this year, no matter the degrees. And next year, let's do it all again shall we?

Merry Christmas Music, From the Mo's

Starting Christmas music on October 1 is Morlet tradition.

Well, it's more like "Jules" tradition, because Mr. Mo can't seem to lose his grinch face until about October 31.

Christmas music represents so much more to me than melodies and harmonies for a particular season. It represents memories. It's the nostalgia of childhood, the romance of my 20's and the glittering excitement firsts we get to share anew with our baby girl.

In high school I use to complain about the lack of time between Thanksgiving and Christmas morning to discover new music. With everyone creating and recreating old classics, 30 days just isn't enough time to listen to it all. So in 2006 I started a tradition of blasting Christmas music on October first.

From the halls of the girls' dorm to my West Hollywood apartment, we're on year seven of this glorious tradition.

I love waking up to friends texts and Facebook tags saying things like "Did you get your eggnog last night?" and "I'm listening to Michael Buble in honor of you."

Yup, it's awesome.

So here's to another year of the best genre of music there is!

Changing the World by my 25th Birthday

The last 364 days have been a sweet and sour cocktail for me. I was just telling Ty at lunch, "I usually get to my birthday thinking how fast the year flew by. But this year felt a little too long." That's new.

The last 364 days were unexpected and some unwanted; but looking back, I can say I feel like I grew up a little this year.

You know when you ask a child on her 12,13, or even 21st birthday, "So! Do you feel (insert age)?!" No, is the typical response and oh so true. I don't think we ever really feel older until something happens to remind us of the miles we've put on our life's engine.

But today is different. Today I feel 25.

I've dreaded the arrival of today since my 22nd birthday. To me, 25 is that age when you're "really" an adult. Like for reals. You can't mess around with life anymore. (I mean come on, I can rent a car now!) Your vocabulary slyly shifts from concerts and rag mags, to IRAs and fiscal years. 25 was my "far off" age that I always threw things off to, but never really soaked in its encroaching arrival.

When I was 20, I wanted to conquer the world by the age of 25. "5 years," I thought. "That's a long time! I've got this!"

To that girl, I'd say now:
Oh sweet and dreamy girl, 25 is not your end goal. By 25 you will have experienced a new depth of love, loss, sorrow and overwhelming joy. Yes, life will change, jobs will kick in (kinda) and people will have a new set of rules and expectations for you to follow, but by 25, you'll realize your life, as confusing and chaotic as it may be, is beautifully unwrapping before your very eyes.
A couple weeks ago, when I was deliberating this whole concept to Ty, he smiled at me in the comforting way that only he can, and said, "Baby, you have conquered the world. You've started ripple effects that will change it long after you and I are gone."

I kept thinking about his words all day. Ripple effects. Ripple effects. Ripple effects. And the only image I could see in my head was my Baby Girl Mo.

She is my world changer.

Not just my personal and literal world, but a changer of the entire world. She will be strong, she will be courageous, she will learn gentleness and humility, and she will learn to be brave.

She is coming to me at a time I would have considered "past due," but God knew better. He created her to exist at a time when my human notions could have easily convinced me how fleeting life was.

The world will change because of her.

So I face this next 25 years, shaking in my pink slippers and over stuffed from a birthday lunch, but completely confident in the woman God is fashioning me to be.

He knew when He fashioned and knitted me in my mother's womb, that disillusionment would be my kryptonite. But He also knew through the broken glass would be a life I could have never had enough time or imagination to dream up for myself.

I may move a little slower, watch my calorie intake a little closer, or even sleep a little earlier, but I can feel this is going to be a pivotal year. With preconceived notions seeing themselves to the exit doors, I'm sitting in my West Hollywood apartment, excited and a little nervous to see who I will be next year.

Happy New Year to You (And Us!)

I love new everything. New days, new seasons, new clothes, new groceries, new lives, new journals, new, new, new, new. I love old too, but there's something invigorating about the idea of something becoming "new." The rest of the world thinks so too, which is why we say Happy New Year, instead of, Super-bland, same old New Year.

We are an optimistic crew. So we set goals. Beautiful, over-ambitious lofty, and sometimes just a tad bit out of reach. But that's on purpose of course. You gotta shoot for the moon right?

My last year's resolutions were--
Get rid of things I don't use. CHECK!
Raise the bar on my writing. CHECK!
Dream a little bigger for this pretty space. CHECK!
Write out my grandparent's love stories. #fail (but soon to be rectified)

This year, with all the changes taking place in our family, Ty and I set our New Year Resolution together, so we can meet it as a team.

Learn and record 1 new cover song a month

We've always wanted to cover songs like the Civil War's Poison and Wine or Colbie and Jason's Lucky, so this year, we're gonna do it. (And you'll get to see them too!)

We expect this year to be both bitter and sweet. Like a giant Hershey's Dark Chocolate bar. I have many goals and dreams this year and I hope you do too. Come what may, we will choose to not let our fears trump the hope we have for the future.

I'll leave you with my closer from the last couple years because it still rings true.

For some of us this year is our Ctrl + Alt + Del button.
For some of us, this year is the continuation of the best year of our life.

For some of us this year will bring great joys and greater triumphs.
For some of us this year will bring such sorrow and utter disappointment.

For some of us this year will fly by just like the rest.
For some of us this year will drone on into what seems like an eternity.

For some of us this year will be one of significant discovery.
For some of us this year will be one of significant loss.

But for everyone, this year will be another year added to the timeline of our seasoned lives. And when we look back we'll see how invaluable this year was in the making of who we have become.

What Are Your Christmas Traditions?

Original Photo // Edited by JMorlet

Last Year I did a series with my friends on our Christmas traditions. Since our little family is starting soon, Ty and I've been chit chatting here and there about traditions we might want to try with the Morlet Clan.

I had a lot of fun re-reading through these and thought you might find them sweet and original.

What Christmas traditions does your family do? Tell me!

Thankful for Change

This season I have an immeasurable amount to be thankful for, but it is all summed up with this guy. These last couple of months, we have been fused together in a new city, a new home, a new job and a new baby on the way. Change is tightly crammed into the Mo home this year. And we wouldn't have it any other way. ~

For the Next 31 Days

Oh Fall. You are the bringer of all things orange, pumpkin, and cozy.
Sweaters, leggings, boots and scarves star littering our closet, bed posts and, if you're me, your dining room table.

Fall comes with all sorts of new things, new colors, new leaves, and new friends! I went to coffee (and waffles) with Lauren earlier this month and Maggie this morning. Uh-may-zing women here folks.

With that, I'll be joining Maggie on the 31 Day Challenge through the month of October. I love October so much, for so many different reasons. Mostly because it seems to be a reoccurring "pivotal" month in my life.

Here's how to join the LEGIT challenge:
  • Pick a topic, broad enough to write about for 31 days but narrow enough to hone in on your passions. For example: 31 Days of Life, is too general. 31 Days of Pumpkin Spice Lattes, well, it's too narrow and that's just not good for you. (Not that i've tried it...)
  • Make a blog button (or use one of my pre-made ones at the bottom) to use as your link up image on.
  • Post something, anything, everyday about your topic. It doesn't have to be the ONLY thing you post and it can be small. Starting small is always good.
  • Leave your website link in the comments so I can read yours!

Here's how to join the LAZY challenge:
  • Use my prompt, write your blogpost and post your link in the comments or Facebook page.
  • Not a blogger? Leave your response in the comments or Facebook page

Why should you join us?
Because if you're a human being, you love learning new or perfecting old things. This is a good excuse to get some accountability and motivation! Even if you're not a blogger, post some pics or status updates on your Facebook. Oooh that's a good one

Get ready October, here we come!

Seeing Mother's Day from the Other Side

--- Today, in honor of this year's Mother's Day and my current season of life, I am intentionally bringing light to the many women who are going through the battle of loss or infertility. Just as a somber reminder that we are more common than we realize. I did ask my mother's blessing to replace my usual gushing of her with today's post. You can read about how much I adore and love my mother here, here, and here. ---

There is a large degree of hopelessness in infertility, one of waiting and constant disappointment, and it is often isolating.

Last night, after church, I was packing up my things in a side room and my friend Marcy came bursting through the wooden door. "I've been looking for you," she said. "Well, here I am!" I replied with a smile. She held out her hand and in it were two roses. One white and one pink. "These are for you, because you're a mommy twice." I was definitely caught off guard, 1) because I forgot we give out roses for mothers on Mother's Day and 2) because she remembered me.

I gave her an almost-too-tight-hug, said thank you, and she whisked away. I stared at my roses and was overcome with emotions equally split between sadness for my reality and gratitude for my friend.

I know my story is 1/10 of the length and pain some women have grieved and lost. I have a lot to learn when it comes to this new journey of my life, but if there's one thing that has kept me moderately sane it is this: It is fact, the one thing God has done over and over and over again in the bible is opening the barren women's womb.

Sarah, Rebekah, Rachel, Samson's Mother, Hannah, the Shunamite woman, and Elizabeth. (Mical, Kind David's wife, was the only recorded barren woman who we know for sure did not conceive. She will be getting her own blogpost soon.)

In all these instances, there are moments in the stories when the women lost hope. They gave up. They got to a place where they accepted their reality of being childless, though their longings never wavered. Even through the black and white lettering, I can sense the intensity of their emotions and imagine the weariness in their voices. Probably because I've been there. There's no way that is possible. I can't have babies. I've tried, you can hear them saying.

But God saw them. He saw them in their weariness and He loved them. To some He gave the miracle of children and to others, He didn't. But to all of them, He showed them who He was amidst their pain and sorrow.

And in all circumstances, they saw God and they worshipped Him. Probably not bubbly and excitedly. No, it was more likely to be through the tears of ugly crying, but they worshipped Him nonetheless.

I don't know what your Mother's day holds and what your past ones mean to you, but I know the brokenhearted mother (or mothers to be), are often unmentioned. Not maliciously or intentionally, of course. But as one of them, I wanted remind us that wherever we are today, the Jehovah God, He sees me and He sees you. He knows our names, He knows our pain and He sees us right where we're at. That is a promise.

And, if you are a mother, who has been sovereignly blessed with children, pray for your sweet sisters who are broken hearted today, remember them, and enjoy your sweet (and sometimes crazy) children to the fullest.

Happy Mother's day friends. ~

24 Before Turning 25

It feels good being 24. So far. I was nervous, thinking that somehow adding one more year meant adding the world. I'm glad God let us age slowly. Just one year at a time, though sometimes it feels like 10.

A friend of mine told me a story recently about when she turned 24. She said her sisters warned her that her skin would start aging more quickly, so she needed to be religious about washing her face at night and applying sunscreen everyday. She has some of the best skin I've seen! I'm adding that on my list this year, #16.

Here's to another year of making lists and accomplishing goals!
1. Go bungee jumping 2. Successfully de-clutter my wardrobe 3. Go to New York or Hawaii 4. Learn a new instrument 5. Establish 3 girls conferences 6. Move 7. Start a new tradition with my family 8. Have a movie marathon 9. Find new sugar-free recipes 10. Keep off wedding weight 11. Watch the sunset & sunrise in home town 12. Drink more green tea 13. Work towards self employment 14. Start a new hobby 15. Memorize Proverbs 31 16. Wash face and sunscreen everyday 17. Write down all our grandparents' love stories 18. Partner further with Love 146 19. Make more music with Ty 20. Try out pink hair! 21. Finish 1 Smashbook/month 22. Meet up with blogger friends 23. Take a hot air balloon ride in home town 24. Know God more

**This post concept is not an original one. It was inspired by A Beautiful Mess

I Cried in my 24th Birthday

TysonMorlet just danced me into my 24th year of life. And I bawled like a baby on his shoulder. Happy birthday to me!

Today will be a 3X post day because it's my birthday! 1) This sweet moment between me and him, 2) what to get me for a present and 3) my list of 24 things to do before I turn 25. This is going to be fun.

New Year Resolutions: The Maddness of Dreaming & Making Plans

Photobucket
I've always heard, time flies by faster as you get older.
This New Years, I feel that is truer than any other. 2011 was such a modpodge of a year. Summed up, I'd say the Word of the Year is Tears. Tears of joy, tears of loss, tears of adventure and tears of unbearable pain. A lot of this year caught me off guard. I think most people can relate with that.

It's crazy that we still plan in the first place. Though we hope things will follow suit, we know, deep in our souls that something very well may go wacky at any given time. Plans will change, yet we make them. Call me hopeful or call me mad, but I'll keep doing it. It let's me keep dreaming.

I looked back at last year's resolutions and I am thrilled to say all but one (the album one) have been accomplished! First year ever!

-Finish the first draft of my book.
-Write @ least 1 of 3 e-books.
-Lose the wedding weight. :)
-Start our creative workshops.
-Finish writing my new album.
-Learn to like sushi.

I didn't want to jinx this year, so I narrowed my over-zealous list to 4 things for 2012.

Photobucket
1. Write out my grandparent's love stories.
On the way home from Christmas this year, I was telling Ty about how my mom's parents met. I was getting a little jumbled in the details and by the end of the story I thought out loud, Man, I should really have them tell me again and this time, write it down! I can't wait for this one. 4 love stories will be documented this year. Maybe I'll e-book them for the world to read.

2. Get rid of things I don't use.
Clothes, knick-nacks, makeup, jewelry, books, etc. I probably won't sell any of it, because I hate doing eBay, but I'll definitely be giving a lot away. So if you get a book from me for your birthday this year, well, you know I'm on track.

3. Raise the bar on my writing.
While working with She Seeks these last couple of months, I am learning how important, hard, but rewarding an editing process is for all writings. The team over there has taught me a lot of strategies and formulas to writing well, and I want to implement those over here as well.

4. Dream a little bigger for this pretty space.
I want this blog to be a place of conversation and inspiration. I want to create a community built around alliance, relationships, and encouragement. I have a few ideas but I'd love yours too. Anything you think might work here?

I have many goals and dreams this year and I hope you do too.
I'll leave you with my closer from last year because it still rings true.

And when we look back we'll see how invaluable this year was to the making of who we have become.

Happy New Year dear friends & family. Happy sweet New Year.

Farewell 2011 | See you in the New Year

This blog has been a great many things for me: an escape, a tool, and recently, a community.
It's taken me a while to figure out my niche in this big wide world of blogging. I've written many silly pointless posts, grasping for some purpose and/or traction. I still feel as though I'm floundering, however 2011 has been a good year for me and this little hobby of mine.

Here are just  a few of the many exciting things that happened this year:

-I became a writer as part of the She Seeks team!
-Advertisements in JOIE Online Magazine
-Created & launched 2 online e-courses: Blogging & Singing
-Partnered with Antioch Temecula for a follow-up to their Dating Series
-More collaboration [20+ writers!] and guest bloggers on many topics, from spirituality to beauty secrets
-Developed 2 staple segments: Sundays are for Worship & Friday's at JM

So what's next for JM? 2012 holds many a goal and dream. Things will change around here. I want this small space to be a place of obvious community. A space where you and I feel safe, encouraged, and inspired

There will be new segments, features, downloads [!!], focuses, spins and twists. I'm finding my niche a little bit at a time and I think 2012 will prove that.

I'm a girl who wants to conquer the world through words and music; or at least make a dent in it. I'm not sure how that will play out in this next year, but I am hopeful.

So this is farewell my friends, for 2011
I am spending the last weeks of this year re-designing this pretty place and eating and laughing way too much with friends and family.

See you in the New Year! Come see me January 1st!

Love,
JM
